For biologists
Life sciences reasoning is one of the domains where models improve the moment expert biologists start correcting them. The work is remote, the pay is in USD, and the demand is expanding.
Biology is a large, technical, and often counter-intuitive domain. A model that has read every paper on PubMed still needs a working biologist to tell it when a molecular mechanism is confidently misremembered, when a phenotype has been described the wrong way round, or when a species-level claim is being made from a study that only looked at one strain.
Frontier AI labs have started building sizeable expert programs specifically for biology, and the roles are only expanding as models are pushed into drug discovery, protein design, and clinical research support. The bottleneck is not compute. The bottleneck is trained biologists willing to sit down for a few hours a week and correct model reasoning at the level of a peer-reviewed journal.
What the work looks like
- Response evaluation. You review model outputs on prompts covering molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, ecology, immunology, or another sub-field, and score them against what a trained biologist would say.
- Fact-checking against literature. You verify specific claims against primary literature and flag whenever a model has generated a plausible-sounding source that does not exist.
- Adversarial testing. You construct prompts where the model is likely to confuse similar mechanisms, close taxonomic groups, or overlapping pathways.
- Rubric review. You audit the criteria the lab is using to grade biological outputs and flag anything that would let a common misconception through.
The work is asynchronous. Sessions run in blocks of two to four hours. Deliverables are documented.
What labs actually look for
Graduate training in a biological sub-field, or active research engagement. Familiarity with primary literature. Written English at the level of a research paper. Region and institution matter less than recent, active work.
They do not look for AI experience. Nearly no biologist hired for this work has ever trained a model. They are hired for their judgment on biological correctness.
Where the pay lands
Rates are in USD. For biologists in emerging markets, this often exceeds the equivalent postdoctoral or lecturer income by a significant multiple. For biologists in Western institutions, the rate compares favorably with consulting on an hourly basis.
